SAFER
Students Advocating for the Eradication of Racism

Young Playwrights' Theater (YPT) has developed a new after-school program for high school youth to expand the applications of storytelling and performance.

SAFER (Students Advocating For the Eradication of Racism) is a social advocacy and arts education program for 10th and 11th-grade students who are committed to promoting racial justice in their communities through their collective creativity. Over the course of a school year, students will learn and practice the skills required to organize and galvanize their communities and will showcase those skills through a theatrical performance event.

Program Schedule and Expectations
For the first half of the school year, the students will focus on ensemble building and learning the fundamentals of social advocacy. Students will meet for 90-minute sessions every two weeks and will be led by a YPT teaching artist and guest artists who specialize in community advocacy and performance.

For the second half of the school year, students will implement what they have learned about social advocacy by facilitating town halls and coordinating with other youth-serving organizations as well as writing and rehearsing a performance that will showcase what they have accomplished and their vision for their communities. The students will meet for 90-minute sessions every week for the remainder of the program.

The culminating event will be a performance and post-show discussion with the students about their experience in the program and what they hope to achieve beyond its conclusion.

By participating in the program, students will complete a minimum of 50 hours of community service, learn writing and performance skills, and develop social advocacy knowledge.
